Memory House

Installation for a project in collaboration with a center for people suffering from Korsakoff Syndrome (a dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease). I worked with a woman who had lost a lot of her memories and had no short term memory. We spent a lot of time together talking about her life. I welded an “instable” house (structure), collected used handkerchiefs worldwide through a call on social media and asked her to tie knots in the handkerchiefs while telling me the memories she had left. (People used to tie knots in handkerchiefs to remind them there was something they shouldn’t forget.)The handkerchiefs formed the outside layer of the house. inside there was a sound installation with recordings of her voice but her exact words were inaudible.

Exhibition in the Town Hall in Arnhem (NL), different locations afterwards.
